Dye FAQs and Important Information

About the dye process

     - I do not use “Rit”, I use a professional dye product that I purchase in a powdered form from a wholesale supplier. I am not licensed to resell this product, so I am sorry that I cannot sell you the dye. I do not have a color matching machine. Each color is made by hand and discerned by eye. The dye process takes 40 mins for one attempt, so each time I test a color it takes 40 minutes. I also can only do the work during the day when I have natural light to compare my colors in. I cannot use artificial lighting as colors are often skewed by it. This is why custom dying garments is a long and tedious process.

Important information about custom dyed garments:

     - In my particular dye method, the garment must be rinsed in HOT water to remove any excess color. Due to this rinse, your garment will shrink some. Clients should account for this when choosing items to send for custom dying.

     - Occasionally streaking or spotting may occur. This may be due to imperfections in the fabric itself, chemicals in the fabric (either from the manufacture process, or the clients attempt to clean spots out of the garments previously), or may occur if there are undissolved pigment particles in the dye. (I make every effort to strain them out before dying your garment) If streaking or spotting occurs, there is sometimes nothing that can be done to remove it. I will be happy to re-dye another garment at no charge in such cases, but I cannot replace the item. Clients should be aware that they do run this risk when having something dyed.

     - I cannot guarantee a perfect color match. I do my best to match your items using natural light. (When evaluating the color match, please do so in daylight) If you would like references or examples of matches I have done in the past, I can provide them upon request.

     - In the event that I cannot match a color, there will be no charge  regardless of the amount of time spent in the attempt. I cannot however, replace the item. If you are unhappy with a color match, that I deem a good match: I can attempt to make it more to your liking. I must be notified of your dissatisfaction within 7 days of receiving the item. There is no charge for re-attempting a match, but the client is responsible for shipping charges back to me.

Dyed garment care:

     - When the item is shipped back to the client it has been washed and is ready to wear or be pressed. When the garment needs to be cleaned  it is recommended that the garment be hand washed or on put in the gentle cycle of your washing machine. I also suggest using “Forever New” soap for your dyed garments. Excessive washing will cause the garment to fade faster, as will rough washing.

     - I do not recommend having your dyed garments dry cleaned. Several years ago a client's jeans were ruined by a dry cleaner. There are several corrosive chemicals used in the professional dry cleaning business that can damage the color. Dry cleaners use a myriad of cleaners depending on their preference or location. To be safe we just don't suggest that dyed garments are dry cleaned. If you choose to chance having your items dry cleaned, it is at your own risk.
